Officer at periscope in control room of a U.S. Navy submarine in World War II

First a catastrophic oil rig explosion, the likes of which we have never seen in the Gulf of Mexico, or anywhere in the world for that matter, and now a boater off of Hollywood Beach spots what is described as a submarine periscope. off Hollywood Beach in Florida. . Read about it here.
For those of you unaware, a naval use of a periscope allows a submarine, when submerged at a shallow depth, to search for targets and threats in the surrounding sea and air. When not in use, a submarine's periscope retracts into the hull. A submarine commander in tactical conditions must exercise discretion when using his periscope, since it creates a visible wake and may also become detectable by radar, giving away the sub's position.

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the mon, and in the stars, and upon earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and waves roaring. Luke 21:25
