Got a bridge for sale

Truth is stranger than fiction.

BCL man sells bridge!

Barisal, Aug 24 (bdnews24.com)—A pro-government student leader has dismantled a Pakistan-era bridge and sold the parts reportedly by flaunting 'false' auction documents.
Locals said some five people, in presence of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Banariparha Upazila unit convenor Rahat Ahmed Noni, took away parts of the bridge on Tuesday morning in Labansarha area. They showed documents claiming that they had purchased it in an auction.
A RAB-8 team on Wednesday recovered some parts from a scrap metal store.
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mohammad Ibrahim, however, denied auctioning the bridge.
"The district administration at a meeting a few days ago rejected an application of some Banariparha Chhatra League supporters to buy the bridge."
The meeting later decided to reinstall the bridge on the canal near the house of Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq.
The UNO said the paper shown to the people was false as it had an unauthorised serial number dated Apr 13. "The auction paper Noni showed bore the number 826, but the last serial number of that day was 199."
Chief of camp-1 of RAB-8 Major Rashidul Hassan Khan said they had seized 14 steel channels and 118 plates from the store of Mohammad Mantu Mia from Haatkhola Bazar in the evening.
Mantu confirmed that Noni, brother of Banaripara Upazila vice-chairman Maolad Hossain Sana, sold off the parts. "I bought those for Tk 68,100."
Noni, however, told bdnews24.com he did not know whether the auction document was a fake one. He pointed an accusing finger at local Awami League leaders Syed Jakir Hossain and Milon Munshi, who were present at the scene.
"Sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam of Labansarha police investigation camp came to me that day [Tuesday] and enquired about the matter. I showed him the document, but don't know if it's false," he claimed.
Rafique said they had been informed by the district administration on Tuesday morning. "Locals are not disclosing who are behind the incident."
