And Now for the Worst... Golden Globe Gowns 2010

Let me preface this post by letting you know that there really were no frocks that made me cringe and bite my lip. With that said, I was still "concerned" by a few of the gown choices.

First up, Julianne Moore's Balenciaga dress was way off... Where was the shape, the curve, the silhousette? Why would you diet and excercie frivilously and then choose this gown just so you can cover it up? At least she slightly saved the ensemble with a fab pair of earrings. It ALMOST (not really) made up for the bizarre neckline and unfortunate and unkept hair-do. I know it was raining, but don't you have a stylist following you around?

Next up is the hottest woman to hit television in a long time, Sophia Veranga. Unfortunately, she chose a Carolina Herrera dress that did absolutely nothing for her. The material was my first big issue because it looks like that of a high school prom dress from Jessica McClintock. Sorry to all those girls who love Jessica:( My second issue is that it was just way to much material for such a small lady. It was like she had another dress following her around all night.... She had every opportunity to show off her incredible sex appeal and beauty, but this dress did neither.

Oh Anna Paquin. This is a simple case of when a dress is incredible and the styling almost ruins the entire thing. Stella McCartney created a fabulous gown and Anna (or Anna's stylist) decided that a clunky pair of gladiator sandals was the appropriate shoe choice. This was NOT the appropriate shoe choice. It was way too much going on and a much too heavy choice for a shoe option. Plus, these shoes are meant for a summer look, not a red carpet.

Finally we have Tina Fey in Zac Posen. A good idea in theory, but this is WAY too much dress for such a small woman. Too much pattern, way too much length and too much "bow-y" shoes. All in all, too much! If it had one less tier on the bottom, it would have substantially helped her cause... Unfortunately, they decided to keep the tier. Sorry Tina, this just wasn't your best fashion choice..... You are still funny though:)

So that is it for my ranting and raving about the Golden Globe fashions. There was no total blunders, which made me smile. Obviously there will always be a few that are off, but what would an awards show be without that? Um, boring. I commend you all for trying to look your best and braving the scary waters of internet commentary. Good job.

The BEST Golden Globe Gowns 2010

Ah, awards season is here again! I LOVE this time of year. It is all about glitz and glamor and everything fabulous! Bring on the bling.

I know my first pick for "best dressed" at the Golden Globes is going to come with some criticism. My boyfriend has already chastised this choice. Drew Barrymore looked stunning in her Atlier Versace gown. The shoulder and hip detail bordered on that of a sea creature, but I still thought it was to die for. It was chic and elegant with a funky, individual twist. Nude is not always the best choice for the red carpet, it is easy to look washed out, but I really just loved the elegant detail on this dress. Her hair and make-up also perfectly complimented the simple sexiness of the overall look.

Next up for "best dressed" is January Jones. She always tries to do something just a little different and I truly appreciate that. Black is never one of my favorites on the carpet, it just doesn't read well on camera. That is why I was so drawn to this look, because it DID look different and interesting. Not an easy feat. I was thrown off by the hair ribbon at first, but it really grew on me. I think it added to the "chic" quotient by a million. She took a simply elegant black gown and made it her own. This Lanvin dress was nothing short of spectacular when styled correctly... which it was! Kudos to your hair and makeup team as well for extending the classic elegance throughout the entire look.

Now for some color! Diane Kruger hasdefinitely proven herself to be something of a fashion icon. She is almost always interesting and hits the nail on the head with her fashion choices. This Spring Christian Lacroix gown is fierce in every way possible. Look at that neckline for God's sake! How insanely fabulous is the construction of this dress. Keeping her hair off her neckline was also ingenious because that is the most busy part of her gown. You really don't want to mess with it in any way. Show it off!

I guess looking good is easy for her. It doesn't hurt that she is an amazingly stunning woman who can really pull off anything. Damn you Diane Kruger!

And now a double whammy of beauty and style, Christina Hendricks and Kate Hudson. Both were light and lovely on the red carpet. Kate wore a fabulous Marchesa gown, one of my absolute favorite designers for anything gown-related! Let's not forget to give her shoes a shout out. They seriously helped enhance the funk factor of this look. Christina rocked a Christian Siriano dress.. Oh yes, the winner of Project Runway. Can you believe it? He really is proving to be the most successful winner of them all! To get on the red carpet at the Golden Globes is huge. The fact that this dress was one of my favorites right from the start without even knowing it was Siriano's dress is even better. I love to root for the underdog and he is certainly still just making his way into this crazy world. Good for you Christian!

So there you have it. Feel free to criticize my choices for "best dressed", but remember, this is my blog and all about my opinions:) Overall, this was a great kick off to the awards season and I think everyone did a pretty good job at looking fabulous. Usually there is a safety factor involved in the Golden Globes because it is the first show of the season. I actually think people dove into their fashion choices this year and I commend that! Can't wait for more....

Check me out at a Gossip Girl Party (And They Were Filming MTV's "The City"!)

Ok, so as far as awesome nights go, yesterday was pretty up there. It was quintessentially NYC, in a way that only NYC can be. If you talk to any NYer, they will throw out the statement, "Only in New York" quite a bit. This just refers to how ridiculous things are always happening here and you should just learn to expect the unexpected....

Here is the run down: My BF Courtney asked if I would be interested in attending a party for the book launch of the costume designer from Gossip Girl, Eric Daman. The handsome fashionista that we are posing with (promoting his book very prominently, thanks Court). We contacted a mutual acquaintance who just happens to be the head of marketing for Henri Bendel's where the red carpet event was being held. Yes, we are that cool. It was invite only so she had to put us on a very special list. Again, so cool.

I put on a skirt that you have all seen before, but who cares, I look hot in it. Of course I always feel skinny until I get to these hoity toity fashion events. It is like you imagine. Everyone is rail thin and has on the most amazing ensembles. Of course there is always one or two crazies that really believes their outfit is the bomb, when really it is just an actual bomb.

Any slight insecurity (I just drink and pretend I am the hottest one there:) went away once I saw my friend from high school across the gigantic room. What are the chances? I attacked him, per my usual style, and gave him a huge hug. He is familiar with my crazy antics and I believe he truly appreciates them. His outfit was bananas (ode to Rachel Zoe). I was seriously impressed. Just check John out! When I asked what he was up to he let me know he works in the wardrobe department at Gossip Girl and is allowed to borrow whatever he wants. Um, come again? I think my jaw hit the floor. Not only did I run into my old friend, but he works in the wardrobe department at the hottest show on television and can borrow anything??? As I said, "Only in New York". I will be bothering him:)

So here comes some more crazy.... After I was done hounding my dear friend John, I realized there was T.V. camera's filming everywhere. Where they there for me? No, not quite. Apparently MTV's, "The City" was filming. Now I knew I must have been at the coolest party in town. This level of fabulous is not usually my life so I was sucking it in as much as possible (both literally and figuratively:).

Now, I am not a stalker (at least of celebrities), but once they were done filming God made it apparent that I was suppose to take a picture with Olivia Polmero. I was off in a corner looking at accessories and talking to Courtney when Olivia very quietly was also checking out the goodies. I jumped into stalker mode and asked if she would mind taking a picture with me. As loud as I am, this is truly out of character. I hate bothering people that constantly get hounded and being "that girl". So readers, this celebrity stalking was strictly for you to enjoy how ridiculous this party was. You want me to tell you she was a bitch. You are hoping for some juicy story. Well folks, I just can't give it to you! Not only did she graciously take a picture with me, but she offered to take another one if it didn't come out! What I will tell you is that I am a size 4 and I look like a heffer next to this girl. Refer to the picture if you don't believe me. Courtney would not stop talking about how Olivia's thigh was the size of her own arm.

And now for my sidebar shout out to a favorite outfit of mine from the night! This is Biz (short for Elizabeth, love it!) from the marketing department at Henri Bendel's. She was not only totally stylish, but she was lovely as well. You work that chic preppy look! Blair Waldorf would be soooooooooo jealous.

Here is my finale moment on the red carpet. Most people make their way down this paparazzi filled experience at the beginning of the party, but obviously I am NOT as cool as I previously thought... They were actually taking down the set as Courtney was taking this shot. Oh whatever! This is my first red carpet moment with many more to come...... Look for my big debut in the background of "The City". They even made me sign a waiver:)

Dana-Maxx Charity Event

Yesterday evening I did my mitzvah (good deed) for the holiday season. I worked, as a fabulous stylist, at a charity event benefiting the Women's Funding Network. See, I am not only a fashionable young lady, but I am going to heaven for my good work as well:) These are definitely two positives I have working for me, we will discuss my negatives at another time....

Along with several other fashionable stylists, I was there to chat it up with attendees and make sure they picked the right pieces from the Dana-Maxx collection. If you were about to question the name tags, that last sentence should have answered you:) Dana-Maxx (yes, that is her real name. Awesome.) is the designer who hosted the event. Decked out in a blue dress of her own design, she too is going to heaven for her good deeds and fashionable choices. We are taking a mini-van together and inviting all other fashionable and charitable ladies to join:)

So back to the event, there was a team of hair and make-up people making each and every model fabulous. Don't they look fabulous?:) For the first half of the event, the models were walking amongst the guests showing off the Dana-Maxx collection. Next up was a runway show with her holiday pieces.

The lovely hostesses of the party, Jordan and Megan from Non-Society.com, were as comfortable on a microphone as I am! That is saying a lot... The girls MC'ed the fashion show and showed off different Dana-Maxx looks. They had double duty as models and hostesses!

All in all it was a fun evening and we helped to raise money for a good cause. Come one, come all and join me in my stylish mini-van up to heaven...

Holiday Twist: Suit Up and Leave Your Party Dress at Home!

I know, I know, I have already chatted about Angelina Jolie's Akris white suit. It was so good though, that it was worth another mention. Not just Angelina's beautiful ensemble, but the white suit in general.

Holiday party season is upon us and I am looking for the anti-cocktail dress. How many party dresses can one girl own? Don't answer that, you might scare yourself.

A great option in these chillier winter months is a tuxedo. The age-old winter problem with a dress is that your legs are freezing and you have to find a layering piece to go with your look. Now you have covered up your cute new dress! Of course I love the idea of a classic black women's tux, but have you ever considered winter white? Well you should!

Even Bianca Jagger has done it. She went white and looked uber-chic. Ok, the Colonel Sanders style tie is a bit much, but hell, it is Bianca Jagger!

You may be asking, "All white in winter? Isn't it past Labor Day?" The answer is yes and yes. If it is just too much for you, try a cream tuxedo instead. It softens the bright element, but still has the same dramatic affect. You will stand out... In a good way!

If you are lucky enough to be in a warmer part of the world during this holiday season, change up your idea of a tuxedo. Emma Roberts shows that pants are not always a must when choosing a sophisticated white suit. She is still portraying a classic, yet sexy ideal. Add black tights and black pumps to funk up this concept and wear it in colder weather. Slightly alternative, a little bit funky, totally awesome.

Now although I do believe that this model should have opted for a shirt, the suit does speak for itself. When has a bra and necklace counted for a layering piece? I strongly promote a white suit for a nice change from the party dress, but in addition, it is a great foundation staple! You not only get an amazing white suit, but you get separates. You can really utilize a white blazer and white pants because of the multiple options for styling. The best part, it is seasonless! Yes ladies, you can wear this anytime of the year and to multiple occasions. Dress it up, dress it down, make it what you want it to be. The white suit is a must for all wardrobes, and of course, holiday parties!!!

The Bridget Fit wide-leg pant: $49.50
Boyfriend jacket in seasonless stretch: $108.00

MOD-tastic! My Throw Back to the 60's

You should know by now (if you are an avid reader), that most things I buy have a story behind them. Why should this dress be any different? Almost 5 years ago, while living in Chicago, I wandered into my favorite second hand store (think Goodwill here), and found this fabulous creation. It was old, it was wrinkled, it was amazing. My eye was instantly drawn too it's Missoni-esque style. The fit was slightly off and it was a floor length gown, hardly wearable, but for 5 bucks it was mine. I seriously only paid $5. The truth is that other people would have seen grandma's old, beat up dress where as I saw lots and lots of MOD possibility.

After purchasing my new, amazing dress, I (almost) immediately went to the cleaners. After hosing down my frock, I took it to the best tailor in town. An awesome $5 purchase deserves all of the tailoring it needs. It STILL would not, could not, ever be as much as a brand new shiny cocktail dress. Plus, no one will have a copy of it and you have a fab story to tell when you wear it.

So, after cleaning it, taking it in, chopping off the bottom to a proper cocktail length, it sat in my closet for over 4 years. This is truly not my style, but I just could not find a place to wear this amazing party dress. I am usually only this dressed up for weddings and most of those take place in the warmer months. This dress was clearly made for "getting down" when there was a chill in the air. The material is thick and the silver screams for snow flakes. So it took me getting invited to judge a "Condom Couture" fashion show in October to bring this baby out! She was so happy for the world to see her.

You know that if I was going to show off my $5 "Missoni" dress from a Goodwill style store, I was going to go all the way. Why style things boring when you can style things fabulous?!? I really went with the mod feeling of the dress and pulled out all of the 60's stops. You never want to feel like you are wearing a costume, but why not use what the dress is giving you? This dress was giving me retro fabulous. I went completely vintage and pulled out my silver clutch that also cost me no more than $10. Ladies and gentleman, here we have a $15 look prior to shoes and jewelry. Who is a recession proof fashionista now? I slathered on dark sparlky silver nail polish, the color of the moment, and 2 of my favorite vintage-esque rings. All in all, I was a sparkly silver masterpiece!

My black patent leather round toe wedges completed the look. They were feminine with a bit of sex appeal. They sealed the deal on the cute, sassy 60's feel I was going for. Of course styling does not end with the ensemble, so my make-up and hair had to be done up right! Complete with a cat-eye and a teased out pony tail with side-swept bangs, I had achieved my MOD goal.

Next time you are going to a special gala, don't be afraid of going the distance. A look is about the whole package, not just the dress. Put the effort into creating a head to toe style and you will certainly have a memorable (if not stylish) evening!

Condom Couture: A Fashion Show with a "SEX"y Edge

Last week I was lucky enough to be asked to judge a charity event fashion show that featured some very talented, young designers. There was only one small catch.... Each Columbus College of Art and Design student was asked to create a couture ensemble using 800 condoms. Think Project Runway meets, well, lots and lots of condoms! This idea could only come out of the creative minds of Planned Parenthood.

Needless to say, I stepped up to the plate and took on this very interesting task. As you all know I love fashion, but the chance to see it combined with sex was almost too much for me! I had a stage, a microphone and the opportunity to say whatever I wanted! This was not the type of thing a gal like me passes up. I got to use my fashion knowledge for good and combine it with my undying need to be a stand-up comedian. It is hard not to be at least a little bit funny when you look at the world through "dirty" eyes and are offered an opportunity like this.

Rachel Kaplan was the night's big winner, thanks to me and my two fellow judges. She was awarded a grand prize of $1000 big ones. I just fell in love immediately with her completely wearable creation. The fit was perfection, each separate piece could easily be sold in any department store and the overall styling was fantastic. All three judges agreed overwhelmingly that this truly was a great ensemble from all frontiers. Not to mention that her model Ashley Curl look totally fierce in it. It always helps when your model works out:)

The leggings were the most inventive and creative part of the look. Rachel sewed together material to create a basic legging and then started adding condoms. She cut off the tip of each condom so it looked like a square and then the rubber glue came out. This all sounds very sexual, but I swear we are talking about making leggings right now. She individually rubber glued the sqaure condoms to the leggings to give it an almost deconstructed look. Genius.

The top was also completely fabulous. You must click on the image to see all of the fantasticness (new word) up close. The A-symmetric line was super trendy and at the same time, high fashion. As Rachel let the audience know, she examined Jill Stuart's line to find inspiration. Somehow she managed to make a condom shirt not tacky. Move over Jill Stuart, Rachel has a line of condom couture pieces that are going to knock your line out of the park....

The second place winner was created by Michele Watson. F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S. It was not over the top, it was not crazy, it was just great. The intricate details that went into this simple and sexy black cocktail dress were amazing. I don't think my brain has ever contemplated using condoms in the many different ways that Michele used them. The front of the dress alone had condoms rolled, twisted and turned, all creating a completely different texture. A surprise that only made me love this LBD even more, was that the back was made of yellow condoms. Good coming in and even better going out. Love it.

Third place went to Shirley Weng. I fell in love with the inspiration of her dress, 80's prom night. Talk about a dress that not only looks good, but your friends will thank you for wearing it as well. Safe sex and style apparantly do go hand in hand. Shirley was the only participant to use the condoms as rosettes on the dress. It was like a condom flower, she was in full bloom:) The combination of tough sex appeal through the strectched black condoms, mixed with the pretty pink flowers is almost like egging on your parents. "Hey Mom. I am a budding young female who is like an innocent flower, but you better watch out because come prom night my flowers are going to begin to wilt...." Ok, maybe I am looking into it a bit too much, but I like my storyline for this dress....

Overall the designs were pretty incredible and definitely put a smile on my face. Any evening that can combine an open bar with fashion and condoms is bound to be a good night. Thanks so much Planned Parenthood for letting me be a part of it!

Waiting for Fame....Filming "One Hour Photo"

I have never tried to hide the fact that my true goal in life is to spread fashion goodness across this great and vast universe. My Sass N Style episodes are certainly a good start, but I am looking for the grand television vehicle to bring me to the masses. Doesn't everyone deserve a little Amy Salinger in their lives? A little funny fashion knowledge to get them through their otherwise monochromatic day? Not that there is anything wrong with monochromatic, but we all need a little flashy every now and then!

People have joked with me my whole life that I was born with a spotlight on me.... Unfortunately, sometimes I am the only one who sees it:) Well fashionably challenged people of the world, I invite you to watch my one woman show!

Last Friday I spent the entire day filming a teaser for a new show called, "One Hour Photo". Pretty much it is a makeover on crack. Here is the concept: 2 stylists are pitted against each other in a "mall makeover" that must get done in only one hour. Are they serious? Apparently so:) Each of us ambush an unlikely candidate for a quickie pick-me-up look that will have them looking and feeling fabulous. We have one hour to pick out an amazing ensemble, get them into hair and make-up and take a few snappy and sassy photos of their new looks. It is then up to the mall audience to decide, after looking at the before and after photos of each participant, who has the better transformation. And voila, one of the people is crowned with a prize and I or my fellow stylist receive bragging rights for our "quickie" talents.

So what do you think of my participants makeover? It is obviously hard to make this lovely lady look bad, since she is hot, but I still think I did a good job getting her "date ready". Alright, truthfully because this is a teaser and we are pitching the show, not actually ambushing anyone, this is an actress. Her name is Kiki and she was a great sport. We made her up to be a mother of 3 who has no time for herself and doesn't feel comfortable with her post-mother body. She hides behind her clothing and never takes any time for herself.

Post Amy, Kiki was ready for a night on the town with her hubby to show the world that she still has a sexy, curvy and womanly body! I even made sure to bring out her "cougar side" with the animal print pencil skirt. She is classy and still says Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! The oversized necklace was a great statement piece that made her look trendy and still age appropriate. I had the hairdresser sweep her hair back to show off her fab cheek bones and keep the look extremely sophisticated. Too bad we forgot to take her before picture so she had to take it all off and go back to doubty mom for the shot on the left! Oops.

My stylist counterpart, Kathy, had the lovely job of making over a model. I always love people who look good no matter how much you try to make them look bad! Unfortunately I don't have a before shot of the "college student who doesn't care" look, but I do have this fabulous "night on the town" ensemble created by Kathy. Fun, funky and completely age appropriate. I really wish I had a full body shot because the shoes were to die for. Guess you will just have to imagine her silver booty black lace tie up's by Moschino. So pretty!

So that was my big day of filming! I do enjoy those days where other people can see the spotlight.... I will let you know how it goes and if networks are fighting over the show! Keep the Sass N Style word out there and be a part of speading Amy Salinger's funny fashion knowledge to the universe!!!!!!!

My Big Bloomingdale's Event! Rock Out 80's Style.

Word must be getting around town that I am the hostess with the mostess. Only 2 days after my lovely gig over at Rebecca and Drew for Fashion's Night Out, I was off to Bloomingdale's in the Short Hills, New Jersey mall. My presence was requested to host an event for their brand, Aqua. It was a rockin' 80's party with a DJ and "photographers" (quotation marks are reserved for those people that actually attended the event). Unfortunately, many of the girls buying the clothing were not even born in the 80's. Oy, my wrinkles are hurting right now.

The day was simple, easy and super fun. Basically, in 80's terminology, it was rad. I had an entire department of clothing at my disposal and models to dress... Oh yea, and I was allowed to wear anything I wanted throughout the day. Can you say outfit change much? Aqua has apparently gone 80's crazy because there was leggings galore, sequin coming out my ears and the hemlines seemed to be reaching shirt lengths. Oh how I love the 80's!!!

The great part about the line is that there were women shopping in the department that ranged in age anywhere from 14 to 65. Love it. As I continually noted throughout the day, trends can be worn by mostly anyone, from any background, it is a matter of how many pieces you decide to pile on. Teeny boppers have the option to completely rock it out, while the more mature crowd should really only reach for one piece. I myself, being 30 and a stylist, have the chance to push the envelope a bit while still choosing a more sophisticated version of this 80's tornado of style.

Having 2 lovely young models to dress, ages 16 and 18, I got to live out my crazy 80's fantasy over and over again. They had about 5 outfit changes and all of them were created out of my very leather and fluorescent mind. Have I mentioned I love that overdone era? It certainly didn't hurt that I was dressing girls that were 5'9 and thin.... It always seems to make outfit creations look better... I guess that is why they have the jobs they do. Damn the young, skinny, tall, hot girls! Again, my wrinkles are hurting.

So most of me is really excited that the lovely decade from 20 years past is back again. The only time my head really hurts is when I see overdone, ice wash, ripped, skinny, high-waisted jeans lurking around the store. Otherwise, if done correctly, the 80's can seriously be fun and seriously vamp up your look. Loud materials, fun colors and shiny anything never really did hurt a gal. Add some studding to your life and accept that you love the 80's too!

Bloomingdale's Aqua Line: Check it out!!!

Great Success! Fashion's Night Out at Rebecca and Drew

If any of you had the pleasure of being in NYC last evening, you certainly know why it is clearly one of the greatest cities in the world! Where else does a city band together and throw the biggest party around? EVERYBODY was out in full-force and ready to go. I took the train home at 12am and it was packed! No wonder, every store in town was open until 11pm and serving FREE alcohol. I was in the meatpacking district, which is known for being the super trendy part of town. Catherine Malandrino was next door and they set up an in-door stage and had a French rock band playing. Stella McCartney was down the street and she had a truck that was making pizza pies on the street! That is just the tip of the iceberg....

Although it was a bit quieter at Rebecca and Drew, our 80's mix was killing it. We definitely had liquor flowing and as a perk for this gig, I was drinking it:) Of course I was chatting up the clothing all night telling anyone who would listen how fabulous it is! Look at my fab purple button-down dress. The color is outrageous and the fit is perfect... Which is the point of this tailored company! That great wall behind me is full of different options for your collar, sleeves, buttons, gussets, and embroidered details. I had a shirt designed for me that is a black collared button down with cuffs and a gray owl embroidered on the sleeve. I am totally sleek and stylish.

This rack 'O shirts are actually all of the samples for you to try so you get your size exactly right. That is a whole lotta sizes because women come in a whole lotta shapes. First you decide if you are a curvy or straight gal. Then you start grabbing for your bra size and your height, long or short length. And with the help of their experts (I wasn't very good at eying people up since I was knew to this scenario), you end up with the perfect fit.

Overall NYC is the bomb and Fashion's Night Out only proves it. There is no option for you to ever be bored because they bring the party to you. All you need to do is walk out your door to be a part of everything fabulous!

Fashion's Night Out in NYC: I am Hosting a Party at Rebecca and Drew!

I must be big news now! I am hosting an event at Rebecca and Drew in the meatpacking district of NYC for Fashion's Night Out! If you haven't heard about this extravaganza, let me be the first to tell you all about it! In thirteen countries around the world including the US, Greece, Spain and Japan, among others, the fashion industry is coming together to promote a big night of shopping! Stores will be open late and many are having special guests including yours truly at Rebecca and Drew to create buzz and publicity. Although Charlize Theron will be at Dior and Sienna Miller will be at Intermix, I am sure that the crowds will be flocking downtown to the meatpacking district to hang out with this very famous stylist. Charlize is so last year.

So stop by between 6pm and 11pm and visit moi for personal styling tips. Stop just reading my blog and come meet me in person!!! It is also a great opportunity to buy a shirt dress or button down that actually buttons from Rebecca and Drew. As I have posted before, these little gems are God's gift to any woman that has any sort of a bust. They create shirts based on your bra size!!!! Halleluya.
