The guys that hung out with Jesus noticed that He often went off alone to spend time with God, so they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. His response is found in Matthew 6:9-13. It has been called the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, the Disciples’ Prayer and now the SPY Prayer. Jesus said to His followers – this is how you should pray. Jesus words are in bold. I have added some thoughts to help you understand and pray each phrase. It is great to take the time to really focus on each word and add your own thoughts to God about it. But - this is a powerful prayer any way you use it. You may simply want to focus on a different part each time you pray it. Careful though – this prayer could change you and your world.

Our Father - God is our dad -close and personal - intimate
in heaven, - God is above us – transcendent – totally other
hallowed be your name, - God is Holy – his name is to be honoured
your kingdom come, - Pray for the advancing of His kingdom
your will be done, - We submit our will to His
on earth as in heaven. – Pray for eternal purposes – justice, peace, salvation
Give us today our daily bread. – Pray for the things we need today
Forgive us our sins - Recognize our sins and receive God’s forgiveness
as we forgive those who sin against us. Extend forgiveness to others
Save us from the time of trial – We will face trouble, but God is able to carry us through
and deliver us from evil. –Put on the full armour of God
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Doxology based on 1 Chronicles 29:11
