The book 'Look to the East' by Maureen Lang is about a girl name Juliette Toussaint during World War 1. Juliette was born to leper parents who both died while she was very young. She was later adopted and moved to Greece.
Even though people were in awe of her closeness with God, they stayed away from her because she was a child born to lepers and therefore an outcast. Juliette possessed a special gift-she was given glimpses of the gates of heaven and the light went people went to be with God.
The war breaks out and Germans soldiers invade the quaint village of Briecourt, France. Juliette finds out that the Father of the local church is hiding someone by the name of Charles Lassone.
She often dared venture to the church, to give Charles books and food. After sometime, she and Charles fall in love. Juliette knows very well that she is inviting danger due to an old age feud between the Toussaints and the de Covilles. Similar to the Capulets and the Veronas. Charles however fears for the safety of Juliette thought it would be best that if he escaped. However, Charles makes a startling discovery-Juliette's biological grandfather only wishes them to be together.
Charles then makes a daring return to free Juliette from her village, only to have both of them caught and thrown into prison along with hundreds of people.
While in prison, Juliette often prayed that she and Charles would be free; God did not let her down. However, Juliette felt that God had removed His grace because when people died she no longer had those amazing visions she once had.
