I f i n a l l y got my hands on this Christian Dior 5 Colour Quint Palette in shade Mystic Smoky 004.I have been wanting to get it since it came out months ago.I also have another quint in sold out Crystal Smoky and will review that next.Of all the new shades in the new color collection quints I believe this is the hottest and the best of them. The photo I added which is listed at Sephora is pretty much true to shade.I'll start with the colors which are very rich and highly pigmented.Although you have to learn how to work with them without getting annoyed-because on the first brush swipe the color appears subtlety sheer. If you touch the pan with your finger you can see how rich the color comes up-it's when you use a brush that it's not so apparent, build up the application to get your desired coverage. It's great because you can build the coverage you want and if you don't like that heavy smoky eye look you can create a lovely softer version.I found that some eye brushes didn't work as well as others on grabbing the pigments and the two dual sided mini smudge brushes included in this palette are totally useless, you just need to find a good brush. They also last all day long-still I recommend using a primer for keeping your look fresh. In my opinion I think these shades aren't easily duped and I haven't found versions of these can I can say are the same colors so it's nice to have. They are definitely in the cool tone family and I found them very complimentary on my light toned skin. They should flatter most women but you can always head out to the Dior counter to try on some samples first.Onto the colors:First I have to say this is the prettiest purple which doesn't really show up purple but a dark eggplant or even grayish,it's hard to describe but it's not going to look black-just different. The gunmetal silver is very cool and lighter than the purple-it's also not glittery but has a nice sheen. The brown isn't really a brown on your skin but more like a dark taupe/stone with tiny golden flecks. As for the highlighters:the center pink shows up almost white but not quite white-it still has the hint of pink but it's almost pearly. You get a super high sheen. The white is the best,it's totally awesome! I'm going to see if it's sold on it's own. It's creamy and has golden flecks in it along with a multidimensional diamante effect. If you cover your entire lid with this shade and let the lights hit you it's going to look like a diamond burst into a million pieces on your lids. It's worth having this compact alone. They should have gotten rid of that brown color and added a double dose of this white in a larger pan.You can wear the highlighters alone if you just want a glowing eye that pops. You'll definitely get a lot of looks you can create with this. You just need to have the patience required to experiment. The kit also includes a leaflet that gives you instructions to help you out which is very handy.Plus you get a cute little velvet pouch for you to carry the compact with in your purse. The compact itself in the full size is about 3 x 3 inches and the top when you move around under lighting has a base with holographic CD initials that look blue/purple,very nicely made.I'm not a super fan of department stores brands but Dior has always been my fave they have better beauty products and unique shades and I find this quint totally worth having.I tried to swatch these but the flash in my camera makes the colors appear brighter, the colors are a bit richer than the shots I grabbed. My apologies for the swatches-I haven't mastered how to get them right. Also the white barely comes up on camera but it is an amazing goddess like brilliant highlighter.I'm satisfied buying this compact and want everyone to try it.I know it's a bit pricey but sometimes it's nice for a girl to have that one special compact to pull out of her purse every now and then.
Edited to add this color combination formula suggested by the leaflet:
  • 3 Color Triangle Option: Pick any 3 colors that form a triangle with each other using the lightest as the highlighter shade.
  • 2 Color Shades:Pick the two shades that are directly next to each other using the center shade as the highlighter.
  • Single shade look:Pick one shade for the entire eye and as an eyeliner-using the eyeliner side of the dual applicators.
Availability:Sephora Mystic Smoky 004 $58
