Donate a Memory Day

The older we get, the more important our memories become to historians. That’s why we’re holding Donate a Memory Day:  a day for celebrating age and memories. On the 26th September, senior visitors can see the museum for free and will be invited to ‘donate’ a memory by making an audio recording, which will be digitally preserved so memories will never be forgotten. A CURIOUS HISTORY OF THE GRANT'S NEW HOME: A WALKING TOUR Date: 15 September | Time: 6pm | Location: Meet at top of steps outside Wilkins Building, Main Quad, UCL, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT | Price: Free, but booking is essential at http://curioushistory.eventbrite.com | Age group: Adults | When UCL’s Grant Museum of Zoology moved into its new home, it threw a spotlight on fascinating stories in the University’s history. This walking tour explores the surrounding streets and buildings in search of those stories. Learn about the Medical School’s secret entrance and what it was used for, fights between doctors and professors and the surprising connection to the Natural History Museum. See the effects of the Blitz. Stand on the site of the famous menace to midnight traffic. The tour adds a special detour into Darwin’s life on Gower Street.  Led by science historians Joe Cain and Brendan Clarke (UCL Science and Technology Studies), the walk lasts approximately one hour and will run rain or shine. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. The tour concludes with a free glass of wine in the Museum. Waste Not, Want Not

During WWII Britain had to economise on raw materials, save on energy and salvage scarce commodities, encouraged by a powerful propaganda machine. Whether the message was to grow your own vegetables, make do and mend, or recycle paper, uppermost in everyone's mind was the need to be sparing in the use of meagre resources. While few may now remember those years of rationing and blackouts, the lessons from the past can teach us how to make better use of limited resources today. This exhibition is part of the museum's new initiative 'Packaging our Sustainable Future', sponsored by Tesco.

Royal Wedding Souvenirs 

Thirty years ago, Britain groaned under the weight of Charles and Diana souvenirs. Now the flood of William and Kate mementoes is in full flow, from knitted dolls to Fairy Liquid and Twinings teabags special edition packs. The first royal wedding to benefit from the growing souvenir trade was Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert in 1840, and each wedding since has provided new collectables to help the public mark the occasion.
