People has confirmed that this is the family's belief.
Winehouse ignored doctors' advice to step back gradually from her heavy drinking and went cold turkey in the past month, an unnamed family friend tells Britain's Sun. Her family believes that was too much of a shock to her system, the source adds.
"Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death," says the source.
Amy's Father Mitch wants to setup a foundation in Amy's name to help children and addicts.
"I said I wanted an Amy Winehouse Foundation, something to help the things she loved -- children, horses, but also to help those struggling with substance abuse."
"In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two-year waiting list for help. With the help of [lawmaker] Keith Vaz, we are trying to change that."

She of course had to issue an apology to those too sensitive.

Some 100 mourners, including Winehouse's producer Mark Ronson and Kelly Osbourne, attended the traditional Jewish funeral that closed with her father Mitch saying: "Good night my angel, sleep tight; Mummy and Daddy love you ever so much."
Mitch Winehouse said his 27-year-old daughter had been happier in recent months than she had been for years, and was looking forward to a future with her boyfriend of the past two years, film director Reg Traviss, 35.
Earlier, Traviss had denied rumors the singer died in a drug-fueled haze.
"She had been full of life and so upbeat recently, exercising every day and doing yoga," he told the Sun newspaper. "This terrible thing that happened is like an accident."
Don't think its a big shock that everyone will have to wait for the toxicology report to come back. Is it? I mean its probably going to be drug related and that means they have to test the blood and tissue so....makes sense, right?
The results of the toxicology tests are expected to take 2-4 weeks.
The singer was found dead in her bed after telling a security guard she was tired and was going to bed. No drugs were found at the scene but it is highly expected that the she died of a drug overdose.
Singer Amy Winehouse's parents visited with mourners outside her Camden Square home in London Monday.
Amy's father Mitch thanked everyone.
"I can't tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier for us," Mitch said. "We're devastated and I'm speechless, but thanks for coming."
Winehouse's boyfriend, Reg Traviss, joined the singer's parents at the memorial.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.
Singer and actress Kelly Osbourne, who helped Winehouse check into a drug addiction treatment facility in 2008, was one of many who grieved for the singer on Twitter.
"I cant even breath right now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy and will never forget the real you!" she tweeted.
The concert late Saturday in the Serbian capital of Belgrade kicked off what was to be a 12-date tour of Europe. But Winehouse decided to cancel appearances in Istanbul on Monday and in Athens on Wednesday, according to a statement from publicity company Outside Organization.
The Sun is reporting Doctors at The Priory, where she is currently being treated, gave her a final warning along with enough home truths to put her off turbo shandies for life.
"It's the last chance saloon for Amy. Doctors have come down hard on her because of the severity of her situation. It's a harsh reality but she had to hear it."
Will she take the warning to heart or continue down her destructive path? Time will tell but odds are against her.
