Reigning World Series Champs falling out of Playoff Picture- Cut Dead Weight

ESPN is reporting that the Giants who are at a season high six games out in the NL West have designated both Aaron Rowand and Miguel Tejada for assignment effectively ending their time with the Giants.

"We're at a spot in the season where we have to do some damage control with the roster. A couple things played into it. In both cases, there was diminished playing time, diminished roles," Sabean said. "If this stays ugly, we've got to turn the page, look at some other people and get ready for next year, and try to win and develop at the same time."

Sabean worked to try to move both players to other clubs within the day so they could "continue their careers." The Giants have 10 days to trade or release each player, but would have had to trade them to a contender before Thursday for them to be eligible for another team's postseason roster. Still, San Francisco is absorbing more than $15 million in the combined contracts of Rowand and Tejada.

New York Yankees Hit 3 Grand Slams- New Record

Bonx Bombers are back and fit the nickname on Thursday Night. They pounded the A's 22-9 and batted 17 times with the bases loaded. Several times the Yankees loaded the bases without a hit as the A's pitches struggled to find the strike zone.

The Yankees actually were facing a three-game sweep when they trailed by six runs in the third inning. But Cano's slam got them within a run and Martin's put them ahead. In all, the Yankees pounded 22 hits with five homers, including two by Martin — who went 5 for 5. They also drew 13 walks.

347 Fans in Attendance at MLB Game

The official attendance which counts tickets sold not just who showed up was 22,505 for the double header. But Yahoo! Sports is reporting that only 347 fans were actually in the stadium for game 1 of the double header, which is truly amazing.

According to @790Justin, there was an unofficial headcount of 347 fans in the stands for the first pitch of Wednesday's doubleheader at Sun Life Stadium. Justin Cohen counted five sections with three or fewer people in it and three completely empty sections. The Marlins haven't announced the official attendance, but it likely won't challenge the record of the smallest crowd in modern history (believed to be 653 during a Oakland Athletics game in 1979).

Jason Isringhausen notches 300th save

Isringhausen became the closer for the Mets once Francisco Rodriguez was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in July. Since then, the right hander has shined in his new role.

“I’m just glad it’s over with so we can move on, hopefully, maybe get 301 tomorrow. I’m happy I got it, but I’ve got another game tomorrow,” said Isringhausen. “Now it’s time to move on for myself and keep playing baseball and hopefully get a few more saves before the end of the year.”

Isringhausen, who made his MLB debut as a Met in 1995, showed up to spring training in March with hopes of making the club. After staying for extended spring training, not only was he given a spot on the roster, but he’s become an integral part of his original team.

Jim Thome hits homeruns No. 599 and 600

Thome became the eighth player to reach the milestone. The homerun came at the expense of Daniel Schlereth.

As he crossed home plate, Thome was greeted by his teammates and family members. He was shell shocked from doing the unfathomable as he affirmed, “You dream about it but when it finally happens it’s kind of surreal.” The crowd gave him a standing ovation, as there was a brief halt in the game. There was a congratulatory message posted on the Tigers’ scoreboard after the homer.

Did A-Rod Play or Not?

Try to decipher this coded message:

Rubenstein has also issued a statement saying the original Star story -- putting the baseball star in a seedy den of high-stakes poker, drugs and violence -- "contains numerous factual inaccuracies" and that "Alex looks forward to cooperating with Major League Baseball's investigation."

When asked if that meant specifically that Rodriguez had never played in any of the poker games, Rubenstein said, "I'm just saying what I'm saying." Story Here

If you followed his steroids scandal this is the exact type of path that the final admission took. Deny, Deny, Deny Less, Deny Less, Come Kinda Clean, Come Clean. He's bad a these types of things. Good Luck A-Rod- I hope you didn't bet on baseball because that's a lifetime ban.

Fan returns 3,000th hit to Jeter, team rewards his generosity

As a 23-year-old cell phone salesman, Christian Lopez had thousands of reasons to hold out for the highest bidder on the baseball from Derek Jeter's(notes) 3,000th hit. In fact, some estimates put the ball's worth at $250,000, money that the recent graduate from St. Lawrence University could have certainly used.

And yet when New York Yankees officials found Lopez after he corralled Jeter's historic home run, the only thing that the big Yankees fan wanted was to return the ball to the man who had hit it.

Dodgers File For Bankruptcy

TMZ is reporting that the LA Dodger's owner Frank McCourt has decided to file for bankruptcy.

It's a huge development in the saga of the troubled team. Frank McCourt has been struggling to make the payroll. Interestingly, the creditors include 23 current team members and former Dodger Manny Ramirez, who is owed $20,992,086. Andrew Jones, also a former member, is owed $11,075,000 and current slugger Matt Kemp is owed $216,944.

The trigger for the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing was Selig's decision to kill the $3 billion Fox deal to broadcast Dodger games.

McCourt was bitter, saying Selig has "turned his back on the Dodgers, treated us differently, and forced us to the point we find ourselves in today."
